In the early 1960’s,   Barry Edmonds opened the  family’s first nursery.  It  was known as the “Farmers Market” and was located on the corner of  Route 1 and Huntington Avenue.  In 1969, after the DC riots, Carl  Edmonds joined his  father and together they ran the nursery until Barry’s  retirement in 1970 at which time Carl took over the family business.         Retirement didn’t last long for Barry  however, and after a year of  fishing, Barry opened “Edmonds Nursery” at its current location in 1971.   Together both father and son ran the 2 nurseries for the  next 12 years.   Fresh produce, jams, jellies, and country hams were the bulk of the  business in the early days.  However, as times changed and new  “supermarkets” were built,  the Edmonds’ slowly added flowers, plants,  shrubs, tropical plants, and even fireworks.  At one time, they were the  largest retailer of fireworks in the Washington DC area.         After Barry passed away, Carl Edmonds  has owned and operated  Edmonds Nursery at 8351-A Richmond Highway since 1984.  It is  currently the oldest and last family owned and operated nursery around.   Carl and his wife, Angie, are open 7 days a week from April until after  Christmas.  When you come through the gates, especially at Christmas  time, you are likely to see 4 generations of Edmonds’ all working  together. It was with great pride that Carl paid his first great grandchild   for work performed in the Spring of  2009.         Edmonds Nursery continues to flourish because we treat you (the  customer) as  our family.  Many of our customers have been coming  since they were children and we  have been watching their children grow  up too.  Edmonds Nursery only uses local vendors so our plants are   locally grown.  This means our plants are hardy for your garden. We  know our plants,  we know our customers, and the service is great.
